EPFO gives you several ways to access the same PF account — pick the one that matches what you actually need to do.
For viewing balance and last contribution, the missed call or SMS service is the fastest path and works on any phone. For checking the full passbook history across all your employers, use the passbook portal. For filing claims, transferring PF, updating KYC, or downloading your UAN card, use the Unified Member Portal. For mobile-first access to most of these, install UMANG.
All of these use the same UAN as the identity — and all of them require that UAN to be activated first. If you’re stuck at any login screen, the activation step is almost always what’s missing.
Eligibility
- You have a 12-digit UAN allotted by your employer.

Option D — Missed call service
From your registered mobile, give a missed call to 9966044425. EPFO replies with an SMS showing your UAN, last contribution, and total balance — no internet required.
- 5
Option E — SMS service
Send the SMS ‘EPFOHO UAN ENG’ to 7738299899 from your registered mobile to receive your latest PF balance and last contribution. Replace ‘ENG’ with the language code (HIN, TAM, TEL, KAN, MAL, BEN, MAR, PUN, GUJ, ORI) for regional SMS.

Common mistakes
- Using the EPF passbook portal before activating UAN — login fails because the password hasn’t been set.
- Calling or SMSing from a number that isn’t the one registered with EPFO. Responses go to the registered number, not the calling one.
- Trying to access the passbook immediately after starting a new job. The passbook only shows data after the first ECR is filed (typically 1-2 months in).
- Falling for fake ‘EPFO balance check’ apps and websites. EPFO never asks for your password by phone or email — always start from epfindia.gov.in or umang.gov.in.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the difference between the member portal and the passbook portal?▾
Same UAN/password, different surfaces. The member portal is for actions (claims, KYC, transfer); the passbook portal is purely for viewing/downloading the monthly contribution ledger.
I get an error saying ‘Passbook is not available for this Member ID’.▾
Passbook becomes available only after your employer files the first ECR with EPFO — usually a 1-2 month lag from joining. If it has been longer, raise a grievance on epfigms.gov.in.
Can I access PF without internet?▾
Yes — the missed-call (9966044425) and SMS (EPFOHO UAN ENG to 7738299899) services work on any phone, including feature phones. They return balance and last contribution.
Is the UMANG app safe?▾
UMANG is the Government of India’s official mobile app aggregator. Install only from Google Play or the App Store, never from forwarded APKs.
