If you've ever contributed to the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) in India, you already have a Universal Account Number (UAN) — a 12-digit identity that stays with you for life and ties together every job you ever take.
The fastest way to find your UAN is through the EPFO Unified Member Portal, but you can also recover it from your salary slip, ask your HR team, or use the EPFO missed-call service. All routes are free and take just a few minutes.
This guide walks through the official portal flow first (it works for everyone with a registered mobile number), then covers the fallbacks for the cases where the portal doesn't cooperate.
Eligibility
- You are (or were) employed in an organisation covered under the EPF Act, 1952.
- Your employer has activated EPF contributions for you.
- You have your Aadhaar, PAN, or registered mobile number handy for verification.
Required documents
Aadhaar number
Used to authenticate your identity on the EPFO portal.
PAN
Alternative identifier accepted on the Know Your UAN page.
Registered mobile number
Must be the mobile linked with your EPFO record — needed for OTP.
Member ID or PF number
Optional — useful if Aadhaar/PAN lookup fails. Format: RGBNG00012340000123456.
Step-by-step process
- 1
Open the EPFO Member Portal
Go to the official Unified Member Portal at unifiedportal-emp.epfindia.gov.in/epfo and click ‘Know your UAN’.
unifiedportal-emp.epfindia.gov.in ↗ - 2
Enter your registered mobile number
Type the mobile number registered with your employer for EPF, fill the captcha, and click ‘Request OTP’.
- 3
Verify with OTP
Enter the 6-digit OTP sent to your mobile and click ‘Validate OTP’.
- 4
Provide Aadhaar or PAN
On the next screen, choose Aadhaar or PAN, enter the number, fill your name and date of birth exactly as on EPFO records.
- 5
Receive UAN on your mobile
After successful verification, EPFO sends your 12-digit UAN to your registered mobile number via SMS.
- 6
Alternative — ask your employer
Your UAN is printed on most monthly salary slips and on the EPF statement your employer files. Ask HR or payroll if the portal lookup fails.
- 7
Alternative — missed call service
From your registered mobile, give a missed call to 9966044425. EPFO will SMS your UAN and last contribution details back.

Common mistakes
- Using a mobile number that isn’t the one registered with your employer for EPF — OTP will never arrive.
- Entering your name in a format that doesn’t match EPFO records (extra spaces, initials vs. full names).
- Confusing UAN with your PF Member ID. UAN is always 12 digits; Member ID is alphanumeric with establishment codes.
- Trying to recover UAN before your employer has filed the first EPF contribution — the record may not exist yet.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a UAN?▾
UAN is always exactly 12 digits — no letters, no spaces.
Do I get a new UAN when I change jobs?▾
No. UAN is for life. When you join a new employer, give them your existing UAN so they can link your new Member ID under it.
What if my registered mobile number is no longer active?▾
Ask your current or most recent employer to update your mobile number on the EPFO portal before attempting the lookup.
Can I find UAN without Aadhaar?▾
Yes — you can use PAN or your PF Member ID instead. However, Aadhaar is required separately to activate UAN and access most EPFO services.
